Linear Keypad & Intercom Repair: The Coppell Owner’s Guide

Linear keypad and intercom repair in Coppell typically runs $185 to $420 installed, depending on whether we’re swapping the keypad face, the intercom board, or the full housing and wiring harness. Most jobs are done in one visit since we stock Linear-compatible keypads, power supplies, and intercom modules on the service vans. The way Coppell homeowners usually discover the failure is unglamorous: the gate stops answering the keypad code, or the intercom crackles, or the visitor button does nothing while the motor itself still runs fine. That split between a healthy operator and a dead entry device is the classic Linear symptom, and it almost always traces back to weather intrusion, wiring fatigue, or a keypad membrane that’s simply worn through from Texas sun.

Find it, price it, fix it, document it – in that order. We’ll hand you a written price before we touch a screw, and when we leave, you’ll have a photo log of every connection we touched.

Which Linear Models This Applies To

We work on the Linear entry devices most common across Coppell driveways: the AP-5 and AK-11 keypads, the AE-1000 and AE-2000 telephone entry systems, and the older AE-500 intercom housings still running on plenty of 2000s-era slide gates. The compatibility gotcha with Linear is the wiring. Older Linear keypads ran on a 4-wire setup with a shared common, while the newer AP-5 wants a dedicated 12V feed and a separate relay trigger. If someone replaces a keypad without checking wire count, the gate will open fine for a week and then ghost-trigger at 3 a.m. We see that exact call in Coppell at least once a month.

Identifying your part is straightforward if you know where to look. The model number is printed on the back of the keypad faceplate or inside the intercom box on a white sticker, usually above the terminal strip. Take a photo of it before you call – it saves a trip. On the OEM versus aftermarket question for Linear specifically: we stock both. Genuine Linear keypads run a little more, but the membrane holds up better to UV. For intercom boards, we often recommend a quality aftermarket equivalent because the OEM board for the AE-1000 has been discontinued and remaining stock is priced like a collector’s item.

Vance Gate Repair Coppell is an independent service provider. We’re not affiliated with Linear or Nortek Control, but we service their equipment daily and keep their current wiring specs on the van.

Signs Your Linear Keypad & Intercom Repair Is Failing

Signs Your Linear Keypad & Intercom Repair Is Failing
  • Code works sometimes, fails other times. This is usually a worn keypad membrane. The conductive traces under the number pad crack with heat cycling, and a Coppell summer will accelerate that. The button feels soft or unresponsive when it fails.
  • Keypad beeps, but gate doesn’t move. The keypad is sending a signal, but the relay on the back of the board isn’t closing. That’s a relay failure or a corroded terminal. We test the relay with a meter before condemning the keypad.
  • Intercom buzzes constantly or has no audio at all. The AE-1000 and AE-2000 run a small amplifier board that fails from moisture wicking up the conduit. The buzz usually means the amplifier is getting power but no clean signal.
  • Visitor button at the driveway does nothing. Often the button’s contact is fine and the wire is the problem. Linear ran their button wires through the gate hinge path on many Coppell installs, and that flex point breaks the copper inside the insulation after enough cycles.
  • Keypad display flickers or shows gibberish. This is a power supply failing, not the keypad itself. The Linear power supplies from the 2005-2012 era are known for capacitor drift in Texas heat. We replace the supply and usually save the keypad.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Here’s what Coppell homeowners should expect, in writing before we start:

  • Keypad-only replacement (Linear AP-5 or AK-11 compatible): $185-$275 installed
  • Keypad plus power supply: $260-$340 installed
  • Intercom board replacement (AE-1000/AE-2000 equivalent): $300-$420 installed
  • Full keypad and intercom housing swap with new wiring harness: $380-$520 installed

The range depends on wire condition and whether we’re pulling new low-voltage cable through existing conduit or working with what’s there. Every quote includes the part, the labor, the thermal grease or dielectric on connections where it matters, and a photo record of the finished work. The price we write down is the price you pay. We don’t do surprise invoices, and we don’t discover “extra problems” that double the bill after we’ve already opened the box.

All Linear keypad and intercom work carries the 365-Day Done Right Promise. If it fails within a year, we make it right at no charge.

You can safely do a few checks yourself before spending money. Confirm power is reaching the keypad by looking for a lit or flickering display. Check that the breaker for the gate circuit isn’t tripped. If the unit is completely dead, try the reset button on the operator control board – some Linear systems drop the keypad connection after a power surge and just need a re-learn. None of that requires opening anything dangerous.

What we’d caution against is opening the intercom housing or pulling the keypad off the wall if you’re not comfortable with low-voltage wiring, because the terminal strips on Linear gear are tight and it’s easy to short the relay channel. A crossed wire can smoke the operator board behind the keypad, and that turns a $200 keypad job into an $800 operator repair. If the keypad is working intermittently or the intercom has a buzz you can’t trace, call (817) 674-6552. We’ll come out, meter it, and give you a written answer.
